Google Chat
Google Chat activity provides a lightweight signal of collaboration across your organization. WorkSights ingests metadata for user actions in Chat to reflect when communication and coordination are taking place, while preserving the confidentiality of conversations.
For connection steps, see Connecting Google Workspace.
What WorkSights Receives
WorkSights processes Chat activity through Google's Admin Audit logs. This includes when a user sends a message in a direct message or room, creates a new room or space, initiates a new direct conversation, or deletes a message. Message text, attachments, and conversation history are never received.
How Chat Activity Appears
Chat events appear as short entries on the user's daily timeline. Each entry represents an action such as posting a message or creating a space. Activity uses WorkSights's dedicated color code for Google Chat signals.
Frequent messaging produces multiple lightweight entries rather than continuous blocks, reflecting Chat's quick, intermittent nature. Chat entries contribute to daily activity visibility but do not affect performance scoring.
Data Notes
Google's audit logs do not expose participant lists or message threads. Deleted message events reflect that a deletion occurred, not what was deleted. Activity appears only for mapped Google Workspace users.
Troubleshooting
If Chat activity is not appearing as expected:
- Confirm the Google Workspace domain is connected and Chat is enabled in service-level controls.
- Check that the affected user exists in WorkSights and has been assigned a role.
- Activity appears only for mapped users. Unmapped users do not generate Chat entries in WorkSights.
- For persistent issues, contact support via the in-app chat.
