Google Chat

Chat activity gives a lightweight signal of collaboration across your organization. WorkSights ingests metadata for Chat actions to reflect when communication is happening, while keeping conversations private.

For connection steps, see Connecting Google Workspace.

What WorkSights Receives

WorkSights captures Chat actions from Google’s audit logs: posting, editing, or deleting a message, replying to a thread, sending or accepting an invite, adding a member, and adding a reaction. The entry includes the action type, room, and conversation type.

Message content is never received. Google’s audit log is metadata-only, so WorkSights never sees what was said. Only human actors are processed; bot and app activity is excluded.

How Chat Activity Appears

Chat events appear as short entries showing the action and room. Frequent messaging produces multiple lightweight entries rather than continuous blocks, reflecting Chat’s quick intermittent nature. Chat activity contributes to timeline visibility but does not affect scoring.

Troubleshooting

Chat activity is not appearing

Confirm the domain is connected and Chat is enabled in the Features tab. Confirm the affected user is mapped and has a role assigned. Activity appears only for mapped users.

Activity appears late

This is expected. Chat activity is processed in batches roughly every 10 to 15 minutes.
