Google Chat activity provides a lightweight but meaningful signal of collaboration across your organization. WorkSights ingests metadata for user actions in Chat to reflect when communication and coordination are taking place. This offers visibility into engagement patterns while preserving the confidentiality of conversations.

What WorkSights Receives

WorkSights processes Chat activity through Google’s Admin Audit logs. The metadata includes:

  • When a user sends a message in a direct message or room
  • When a user creates a new room or space
  • When a user initiates a new direct conversation
  • When a message is deleted

WorkSights does not receive the message text, attachments, or conversation history.

How Chat Activity Appears in WorkSights

Chat events appear as short entries on the user’s timeline:

  • Each entry represents an action such as posting a message or creating a space
  • Messages are shown without content – only the fact that a message action occurred
  • Activity uses WorkSights's dedicated color code for Google Chat signals
  • Chat entries contribute to the user’s daily activity visibility without inflating work scoring

Frequent messaging results in multiple lightweight entries rather than continuous blocks, reflecting Chat’s quick, intermittent nature.

Data Notes

Message content is never ingested. WorkSights receives metadata only.

Google’s audit logs do not expose participant lists or message threads.

Activity appears only for mapped Google Workspace users.

Deleted message events reflect that a deletion occurred, not what was deleted.

Privacy

WorkSights's Chat integration is designed for strict confidentiality:

  • No message content is stored
  • No conversation history, attachments, or threads are processed
  • All Chat entries represent metadata only
  • Data is read-only and scoped entirely to what Google’s Admin Audit API provides

This ensures teams gain collaboration visibility without exposing private communication.

Setup

Google Chat activity is available automatically for all users connected through Google Workspace Setup.
